ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising

Key Components of ASA 106:

• Advanced Boat Handling: Skipper a 30 to 50-foot sailboat in coastal and offshore conditions, both day and night, in winds up to 40 knots and seas up to 12 feet.
   

• Heavy Weather Sailing: Learn techniques for heavy weather sailing, including reefing, heaving-to, and storm tactics.
   

• Advanced Navigation: Master coastal and offshore navigation, including use of advanced electronic tools, radar, and chart plotters, along with traditional methods like dead reckoning and celestial navigation.
   

• Passage Planning: Plan and execute longer passages, including overnight sails, with considerations for weather, tides, and currents.
   

• Safety: Emphasis on offshore safety practices, including emergency procedures, life raft deployment, and search and rescue protocols.
   

• Night Sailing: Develop skills for night sailing, including watchkeeping, navigation, and understanding night-specific hazards.
   

• Systems Management: Advanced understanding of onboard systems, including troubleshooting and repairs during extended passages.
